A trademark is a brand’s distinctive identity. It may consist of a symbol, logo, icon, word, phrase, design, or a combination of these elements used to distinguish an enterprise’s products or services from those of others.
Under the NICE (International Classification of Goods and Services) system, which was established in 1957 and adopted by Togo, goods and services are divided into 45 classes: 34 classes for goods and 11 classes for services.
Each class covers a specific category of products or services. Proper classification is important because it provides a clear framework for identifying the goods and services covered by a trademark and helps ensure appropriate legal protection against potential infringement in the future.
